Invisalign Case Limitations, All You Need To Know

Have you ever had your teeth straightened? Are you on the fence about whether to choose braces or Invisalign retainers? We’re going to discuss the benefits and the Invisalign case limitations of Align Technology’s revolutionary product.

What is the Invisalign Process?

Founded in 1998, Invisalign is a clear aligner that allows patients to evade the traditional orthodontic process involving braces. The orthodontist will take X-rays, dental impressions, and photographs of the patient’s teeth which will then be shipped to Align Technology along with a prescription. Technicians at the company will use a CT scan to create a 3-D model of the patient’s teeth and then they will manipulate this model tooth by tooth to establish a final position as prescribed by the orthodontist. Each aligner created must be approved, and then will be sent to manufacturing. Similar to how braces are tightened during each orthodontic appointment, each Invisalign retainer is digitally altered to be “tighter” so that the teeth change their shape. On average, a single patient requires roughly 12 retainers for the entire treatment and will be given the new retainer intermittently during the process.

What are the Pros?

Before we discuss the Invisalign Case Limitations, it is crucial to acknowledge the numerous benefits of this innovative product. Changing the surface of orthodontic treatment, Invisalign is beneficial to those who want an aesthetically appealing treatment that is also considered less painful.  When implemented properly, the plastic aligners minimize plaque build-up. In addition, they also lower chances of tissue inflammation, root absorption, and gingival recession. These ailments are commonly associated with the traditional orthodontic treatment involving braces. Another benefit is easier maintenance of teeth because the aligners can be removed unlike their metal counterparts. This increases dental hygiene and periodontal health. The more prominent benefit that usually wins patients who are deciding between the two forms of treatment over is the beauty appeal. Invisalign frees its users from the aesthetic burden of having a metal frame on your teeth for an extensive period of time. Overall, the innovative treatment has been providing individuals with a great alternative to traditional methods of orthodontic alignment.

What are the Invisalign Case Limitations?

It goes without saying that everything has its pros and cons. The invisalign product, as revolutionary as it was to the orthodontic industry, has some drawbacks as well. Firstly, the treatment is lengthier than the traditional method because there is usually a delay from the initial appointment to when treatment begins. This gap is due to the manufacturing time involved in making the clear aligners. Furthermore, if modification needs to be made for braces, orthodontists can simply tighten or loosen the coils during the appointment. However, for Invisalign, modification entails either shipping a new product or sending the current aligner back for correction. Either way the process is longer than the traditional method. Another significant drawback is that the Invisalign treatment isn’t as versatile as the traditional method. To elaborate, Invisalign has some limitations in regards to root paralleling and isn’t as savvy as metal braces in difficult 3-D movement. While there are several new Invisalign options which address these issues, the standard fixed appliance method (i.e. braces) is more suitable for tougher situations.

While Invisalign case limitations exist, the product offers a comfortable and aesthetically appealing alternative for those who are interested in fixing their teeth. Much like every other product on the market, Invisalign also has its drawbacks. However, this hasn’t stopped Align Technology from creating a profound change in the Orthodontic industry.
