Could your weakness be caused by Low Potassium ?

Potassium is an electrolyte needed in the body for proper nerve and muscle function.  Potassium is responsible for proper muscle function. Without a proper potassium level,  our body can shut down.   A low potassium level can also trigger abnormal heart rhythms.

Low Potassium Symptoms

Symptoms for low potassium may include muscle cramping, weakness, fatigue, constipation, diarrhea.  If these symptoms are present,  it would be best to have blood lab testing done as soon as possible.

Low Potassium Causes

The main cause of low potassium is  an excess amount of potassium lost in urine, sweating and use of laxatives.  Other causes  include vomiting and diarrhea.  That is why it is important to keep hydrated when vomiting and diarrhea occurs, and trying to drink electrolyte drinks, such as Gatorade.

Low Potassium Treatment

Low potassium is treatable with a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables.  If this alone does not help potassium supplements can be prescribed by your medical physician.

  • Bananas
  • Avocados
  • Nuts, almonds and peanuts
  • Citrus fruits
  • Leafy, green vegetables
  • Milk
  • Potatoes
  • Lima Beans, pinto beans
  • Yam
  • Soybeans
  • Spinach
  • Papaya
  • Lentils
