According to many nutrition experts, we are not consuming a wide variety of healthy and delicious foods. They have come up with a short list of  nutritious, widely available and affordable super foods.

Beans and lentils are high in protein, so they’re filing without piling on the fat and calories. They are high in fiber, which lowers cholesterol, and they’re high in complex carbohydrates which helps maintain steady blood sugar and stave off food cravings. The nutrition of beans and lentils helps avoid heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. “Eating a diet rich in legumes can help promote weight loss and has been shown to lower LDL [low-density — “bad” — cholesterol] and raise HDL [high-density — “good” — cholesterol],” .   These two can will provide you with some of the cheapest healthy food you’ll ever find. These would also be perfect for vegetarians and vegans.

Sweet potatoes are full of infection-fighting vitamin A and, like carrots, sweet potatoes are a major source of skin-protecting beta-carotene. Sweet potatoes are a good source of  vitamin C, and have more potassium than a banana. Few people are aware that vitamin C plays an important role in bone and tooth formation, digestion, and blood cell formation. It helps accelerate wound healing, produces collagen which helps maintain skin’s youthful elasticity, and is essential to helping us cope with stress. It even appears to help protect our body against toxins that may be linked to cancer.

All yogurts are excellent sources of calcium, potassium, protein, zinc, and vitamins B6 and B12.  Greek yogurt is thicker, creamier because the liquid whey is strained out.It contains twice as much protein than regular yogurt, which is great for weight control because it keeps you feeling full longer. Also, it contains probiotic cultures and is lower in lactose.

Everyone thinks fresh is best but cooking tomatoes helps release some of the disease-fighting lycopene so it is better absorbed.Tomatoes are a treasure of riches when it comes to their antioxidant benefits.  Tomatoes provide an excellent amount of vitamin C and beta-carotene; a very good amount of the mineral manganese; and a good amount of vitamin E.

Watermelons are an excellent source of several vitamins: vitamin A, which helps maintain eye health and is an antioxidant; vitamin C, which helps strengthen immunity, heal wounds, prevent cell damage, promote healthy teeth and gums; and vitamin B6, which helps brain function and helps convert protein to energy.
