Kids Sunglasses , a new shade of cool.

Sunglasses for kids, are they really necessary?  That seems to be a question asked by many parents.  The evidence from research and opinions from most eye doctors suggest the answer is definitely yes.

Kids Sunglasses and UV light

Many children spend more hours outdoors than adults.   Up to half of a person’s lifetime exposure to UV radiation takes place by the age of eighteen.  Since the lens of a child is a clearer that an adult lens, more UV light will penetrate the eye.  Problems that could result later in life include cataracts and macular degeneration.

How to protect eyes

UV intensity is highest between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM.  Of course, it also depends on the geographical location and time of year.  Kids Sunglasses should be of the type that block at least 99% of the ultraviolet rays : UVA and UVB.

When shopping for sunglasses for children,  note the following :

Note the actual percentage of UV radiation that the lens absorbs.

Don’t be satisfied if the label only says ” Blocks UV Rays “.
