Health Tips to those traveling Long-Term

longtermtravel_355pxIf you are going to be in another country for a long period of time-either for work or school-make plans to protect your health by following these tips.

Find a Doctor at Your Destination

Before leaving to a foreign country, get regular checkups from your doctor and dentist to make sure everything looks the way it should. Plan in advance where you’ll go if you get sick or hurt while you are gone. You may want to consider travel health and evacuation insurance to pay for care in case you might need it. Also, make a plan with your doctor about how you will get refills of your medicines.

Avoid Injuries

The number 0ne cause of death in travelers is injuries, particularly traffic accidents. Always wear a seat-belt, be cautious when crossing the street(especially in countries where they drive on the left) and try not to be on the road at night in developing countries. The other major cause of death is drowning, so take precautions when swimming, diving, or boating.

Get Vaccinated

Ask your doctor about what shots you will need for your trip. The type of shots you will need will vary based on your destination. Tell your doctor if you plan to travel to surrounding countries since other vaccines might be recommended for those areas.

Prevent Other Diseases

Since not all diseases can be prevented by vaccines, take other measures to protect yourself. Diseases are spread by mosquitoes or other bugs, so try to avoid being bitten-wear insect repellent when outside.

Travelers’ diarrhea is very common for long-term travelers so be careful what you eat and drink.

HIV and sexually transmitted diseases are another risk for long term travelers. If you have sex, use condoms every time.

Protect Your Mental Health

Being in another culture can be stressful if you do not know the language and are away from family and friends. Take care of your mental and physical health by eating and exercising regularly. Take photos of family and friends with you on your trip and stay in contact with loved ones at home.
