Menopause symptoms: What you need to know

Menopause is the permanent end of menstruation and fertility this occurs when the ovaries stop producing hormones. Menopause symptoms usually appear in women between the ages of 40 – 50.

Premature menopause symptoms or early menopause symptoms :

  • Irregular periods or hot flashes.

  • Sleep difficulties
  • Irritability
  • Mood Changes
  • Osteoporosis

Other Changes:

You might become forgetful or have trouble focusing.  Your waist could become larger.  you could also lose muscle and gain fat.  Your joint and muscles also could feel stiff and achy.

Natural menopause is the permanent ending of menstruation that is not brought on by any type of medical treatment.

For women experiencing natural menopause, the process is described in three stages: premenopause, menopause, and postmenopause.

Menopause is a natural change that doesn’t require treatment.  But symptoms of hormonal change can be difficult.  Healthy lifestyle habits,  such as eating a balanced diet,  exercising,  or meditative breathing,  may help you manage hot flashes.

However,  not all women experience natural menopause.   Some women experience menopause as a result of surgery or medical treatments,  such as chemotherapy and pelvic radiation therapy.

If you have bleeding after menopause, call your doctor as it may indicate a more serious problem. 

Menopause treatments may include:

  • Hormone replacement therapy (this is not for every woman)

Herbal remedies for menopause may include:

  • Soy foods and natural supplements

Eat Well: 

  • Make sure you have a balanced diet.
  • Ask your doctor if you need a vitamin supplement.
  • After menopause, you may need calcium to go up to maintain bone health.
  • Women past menopause who are still having vaginal bleeding because they are using menopausal hormone therapy might need extra iron.

Be Active: 

  • Exercise can help your bones,  heart,  mood and it can also help you control your weight.   Always ask your doctor what activities are right for you. 

Quit Smoking: 

  • Smoking can damage your bones and it also hurts your health in many ways.

  • Pelvic exam after menopause
  • Pap test
  • Memmograms

 

Depression During Menopausal Transition: 

Only a few women will experience depression that requires treatment during menopausal transition.

  • Panic disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Bipolar disorder

 Be Informed:

There is plenty of information available about the causes of menopause,  symptoms,  and the treatments.   Once you understand what menopause means and all the facts and options that you have available,   what you are facing will feel more manageable.

Speak to other women with similar experiences:

It may help to discuss how you are feeling with others who have been through the same thing.   It’s also important to understand that you are not alone.

Don’t Give up!

Menopause does not only affect a women physically,  it also affects women mentally.   Most women experience feelings  of self-doubt and low-self-esteem,  but there is no need for these feelings to take over.   It is important to remember that you are not going through early menopause alone.   Menopause is experienced by more women than you expect.
